Cape Town Cannabis Cup 2023

About a dozen growers, about a hundred judges, and a first place decided by a single vote.

Cape Town Cannabis Cup, 2023 · 3 April 2023 · An industrial space in the city, Cape Town

The best-documented South African cup result we have, and the most interesting, because of how close it was: first place was decided by one vote.

The format was a hundred or so judges scoring entries from around a dozen growers — a much larger panel than most local cups manage, which is precisely why a one-vote margin is worth pausing on. A big panel is supposed to smooth out individual preference. When it still lands a hair apart, the honest reading is not that the winner was better; it is that the top of that field was, on the day, indistinguishable.

Which is the most useful thing any cup result can teach you. Second place in a field like that is not a lesser cannabis. It is the same cannabis with one fewer vote.

What a placing here is worth

A cup result describes one batch, judged once, by the people who happened to be judging. It is a good reason to look at what a grower is doing now; it is not a promise about a jar in front of you today, which may be a different season, a different cut and a different cure.

If you want the fuller version of that argument, see Cannabis cups, and what a win actually means — and if you would rather learn to score a jar yourself, the five-minute method is the place to start.
