East Coast Canna Cup 2024

Three days at Wacky Woods, and the year's indoor category went to a White Widow — a cultivar older than most of the people judging it.

East Coast Canna Cup, 2024 · 26–28 April 2024 · Wacky Woods, Eastern Cape

The East Coast cup runs as a weekend rather than an afternoon, camped at Wacky Woods in the Eastern Cape, which gives judging the thing most cups lack: time. Samples are assessed over days rather than in one sitting at the end of a long afternoon, and the difference shows in how seriously growers take entering it.

The 2024 indoor result is a quiet argument against novelty. White Widow has been in circulation since the 1990s, and it took a category full of modern crosses — a reminder that a cup rewards how well something was grown at least as much as what it was.

Third place in the indoor category, and the other categories judged that weekend, are not in any source we could find.

What a placing here is worth

A cup result describes one batch, judged once, by the people who happened to be judging. It is a good reason to look at what a grower is doing now; it is not a promise about a jar in front of you today, which may be a different season, a different cut and a different cure.

If you want the fuller version of that argument, see Cannabis cups, and what a win actually means — and if you would rather learn to score a jar yourself, the five-minute method is the place to start.
