East Coast Cannabis Cup 2022

A Breeders Cup won by a grower's own cross — the result that says most about where South African genetics were heading.

East Coast Cannabis Cup, 2022 · 29 April – 1 May 2022 · Wacky Woods, Eastern Cape

The 2022 East Coast cup ran over the long weekend at the end of April, and its Breeders Cup is the category to look at.

A breeders category judges a grower's own genetics rather than their execution of somebody else's, and the winner — Umthunzi Cake #7 — is a numbered selection, which is breeder's shorthand for "the seventh one of these we kept". That is what a breeding programme looks like from the outside: a lot of numbers, most of them discarded.

South Africa spent decades as a place that imported its genetics. A breeders category with real entries in it is the sound of that changing.

What a placing here is worth

A cup result describes one batch, judged once, by the people who happened to be judging. It is a good reason to look at what a grower is doing now; it is not a promise about a jar in front of you today, which may be a different season, a different cut and a different cure.

If you want the fuller version of that argument, see Cannabis cups, and what a win actually means — and if you would rather learn to score a jar yourself, the five-minute method is the place to start.
